::About Us::

Mission and Purpose:
We are students from the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering (BRAE) Department at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, and have come together to participate in the 2007 Quarter Scale Tractor ASABE National Student Design Competition. The competition will be held in East Moline, Illinois, hosted by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) from May 31st to June 3rd, 2007. This is the eighth year that Cal Poly will participate in this competition.

What we do:
Our goal is to develop a vehicle that addresses all of the needs of a specific target market. Beginning with just four Firestone tires and a Briggs & Stratton 16 Hp engine, we design a complete tractor from the ground up. We must follow a thirteen page rules and regulation book to be eligible to compete. Beyond the design and building of the tractor, there is a written report outlining our design including a cost estimate that is mailed a month before the competition. As simple as it may seem, it is a daunting task.

The Competition:
The Design Competition is planned to be both educational and fun. There are five main judging categories: a Written Design Report, a Team Presentation, Individual Design Judging, Maneuverability Course and a Performance Competition. The performance competition, the highlight of the event, is comprised of a multi-stage tractor pull using a progressive sled. For all the details see the 2007 Competition Handbook.

For all the Rules and Event Info, check out the competition website.

What is gained from the competition?
Students gain practical experience in the design of drive train systems, tractor performance, manufacturing processes, analysis of tractive forces, weight transfer, and strength of materials. In addition, students also develop skills in communication, leadership, teamwork, fundraising, and testing & development. A real example of the Cal Poly motto, “Learn By Doing.”
